Common Causes of Neck Pain

The two most common causes of neck pain are poor posture and stress which creates additional tension in the muscles of the neck, mid back and shoulders. Trauma such as whiplash is also a common cause. All of these can lead to painful conditions such as arthritis, bone spurs, degenerated disc, herniated discs, stenosis, pinched nerves and muscles spasms. Neck pain is also more common in pregnancy likely due to the altered biomechanics.

When diagnosing neck pain, a common finding in the x-rays of individuals with neck pain is a loss of the normal cervical lordosis or head forward posture. The literature now reveals that a loss of the normal curve in the neck can lead to early arthritis, bone spurs, headaches, neck pain, shoulder pain and mid back pain. The literature also points to a connection with head forward posture and a decreased respiratory capacity and decreased function of the gastrointestinal tract. Perhaps the function of the entire nervous system is affected by a loss of the curve in the neck. Many chiropractic doctors refer to this curve as the “arch of life” due to its extreme importance.
