Flexion Distraction
Flexion Distraction is a chiropractic technique that can be used to adjust the whole spine but is particularly useful for compressed and bulging lumbar discs.
Here's how it works.
The patient lies face down and the lower half of the table gently oscillates up and down repeatedly flexing and relaxing the spine. The continuous passive motion of the table helps move fluid into the surrounding tissues speeding the rehabilitation of the injured tissues. The gentle pumping action benefits the lumbar discs as well as the facet joints and allows the doctor to feel the spine as it moves. Segments that are fixated or locked in place are easier to find and correct with a gentle adjustment as the table moves.
The doctors at Frisco Spinal Rehabilitation can laterally flex or bend the table sideways as it moves to further check movement restrictions and assist in working out the muscular spasms in the low back.
Studies utilizing myelography (x-ray examination of the spinal canal) have shown that as the lumbar spine flexes, the bulging outer fibers in lumbar disc herniations disappear as does the buckling often seen in the posterior longitudinal ligament. This can lead to relief on irritated nerve roots and improve the function of the spine.
