Migraine headaches are defined as a unilateral or bilateral headache often accompanied by an aura prior to onset. The aura can include visual and GI disturbances. The aura of a migraine is attributed to a constriction of the internal carotid artery and the actual migraine is attributed to dilation and pulsation of the external carotid arteries. Besides the aura, signs of a migraine coming on can include cold hands or feet, light-headedness, vertigo, sweating, chills and sensitivity to odors. Migraine headaches can last between 4 hours up to 3 days and can included nausea and vomiting as well as sensitivity to light, noise and activity.

It is important to note that the pain from migraines and other headaches is not actually coming from the brain. There are no pain receptors in the brain. The pain is generated from structures such as the scalp, mucous membranes in the sinus cavities, arteries, eyes, ears or muscles.

There are multiple causes of migraines such as excessive sleep, menstruation, hunger, fatigue, stress, sleep disturbances, bright lights and birth control pills. Consumption of red wines, alcohol, nuts, chocolates, dairy, aspartame, nitrates, MSG, caffeine, sugar and aged cheeses can precipitate a migraine.

Treatment of migraine headaches initially involves avoidance of anything that aggravates or triggers it. If the headaches persist, chiropractic adjustment to the upper thoracic and cervical spine can be beneficial. Deep tissue massage to the muscles in the upper neck and ice can be helpful. Nutritional management protocols exist and include supplements such as fewerfew, ginger, ginko biloba, fish oil, calcium, magnesium and valerian root.
