Pinched Nerve
Pinched nerves can occur almost anywhere in the body. There are multiple factors that can irritate a nerve such as:
- Direct pressure from a herniated or bulging disc
- A spastic or tight muscle
- A bone spur
- Stenosis or abnormal narrowing of the spinal canal
- Scar tissue or myofascial adhesions
- Inflammation in joints and soft tissues
- Inflamed tendons from an injury
- A more acidic pH in the tissues
- Bruising from an acute injury
The following list shows some conditions and areas of the body susceptible to nerve irritation and the possible symptoms:
- Suboccipital Neuralgia - shooting pain from the upper neck up the back of the head from nerve irritation in the upper neck.
- Cervical Radiculopathy - pain, numbness, tingling or weakness down the arm or hand from nerve root irritation in neck.
- Cubital Tunnel Syndrome - tingling or pin and needles down the forearm and into the ring and little finger from pressure in the elbow.
- Carpal Tunnel Syndrome - pain, numbness, tingling or weakness in the hand from pressure in the wrist.
- Thoracic Outlet Syndrome - pain, numbness, tingling or weakness in the upper limbs from pressure in the neck. There are four possible causes: anterior scalene syndrome, cervical rib syndrome, costoclavicular syndrome and pectoralis minor syndrome.
- Intercostal Neuralgia - pain that radiates between a set of ribs from the back of the rib cage to the front from pressure in the mid back.
- Lumbar Radiculopathy - otherwise known as sciatic neuralgia this condition causes pain, numbness, tingling or weakness in the lower limbs from pressure in the low back.
- Piriformis Syndrome - pain or paresthesia in the back of the leg occasionally extending into the foot caused by increased pressure on the sciatic nerve from a tight or spastic piriformis muscle.
- Compartment Syndrome - painful tight sensation in the calf with severe pain with stretching caused by tight fascia, swelling, fractures, etc. Usually seen in athletes.
- Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome - aching, burning or numbness under the ball and sole of the foot most commonly from overpronation of the foot.
As noted above, the symptoms from a pinched nerve are usually experienced somewhere further down along the course of the nerve. This is commonly called a referred pain or a reflective pain.
