Post-Traumatic Headaches

Post-traumatic headaches are most commonly a result of a car accident. Other causes include anything that causes trauma to the head such as contact sports or a concussion. The headaches usually involve other symptoms such as dizziness, poor concentration, mood changes, anxiety and insomnia. Sometimes the level force is surprisingly small that leads to this type of headache.

The headaches are normally a result of muscular tension and spasms in the neck and scalp. The most commonly affected muscles in the neck following a whiplash injury are the SCM, trapezius and levator scapulae muscles. One of the most prominent mechanisms of post traumatic headaches is reduced blood flow to the scalp because of the muscle spasms.

Chiropractic manipulation can be beneficial for reducing nerve irritation and helping to restore blood flow to the neck and scalp. Massage, electrical stimulation and ice can also be applied to help speed the recovery from post-traumatic headaches.
